Well, Tom, it is almost the memorable day – Aug. 16, 2011 – the day you hit the crest of life and begin the long slide down the hill.
Actually, from one who can barely remember turning 50, I can assure you it is not that bad.
We all love you and hope you have a great many decades of happiness ahead.

Happy Birthday Tom! I can still remember when those Sutherland boys walked through the gates of the Swim & Raquet and became the center of our Summer! Your sense of fun
is always contagious and that great heartfelt laugh is always so good to hear. Your creativity and journalistic talents are evident in so many aspects of your life (still laugh at those Sutherland Christmas cards). Through high school, college, dating, marriage, kids and moves, whenever we run into you the gaps become seamless, the friendship never waivering. You were truly inspirational throughout Laura’s sickness, and so strong for everyone when she passed. Would love to see more of you—Beth

When I reminisce about my days at Aggieland, my thoughts always include you. You were a leader in teaching me the art of how to have fun at college and you were a great teacher. We created memories that have not faded in the first half of our lives. We should make sure they do not fade the back half either.
Thanks for including me in your (our) first 50 years and look forward to catching up each year at your annual get-togethers for the next 50.
Happy Birthday, Tom!

Hi, Tom. I’m only 5 years behind you, cuz, so 50 really just doesn’t seem that old anymore. Since so many people on this blog have been reminiscing, I’ll go ahead and add a (potentially embarassing) story of my own. I think I was in 6th grade when I got hold of a school picture of you. I actually took it to school and showed all kinds of girls, bragging about how this was my good looking cousin, telling them your name and wear you lived, blah, blah, blah. Wow, what a dork! (me, not you) Well, anyway, I always did look up to you and I’m glad to hear that things are going well for you now. Happy Birthday (a few days late)! Love, Candace
